Lil Kickers – Truly Understanding what it is about.

December 29, 2010 by visualpeople

Lately there has been a lot of controversy in the news about kids starting competitive sports too young. The NY Times, Time Warner Magazine and now the Today Show have all showed segments featuring sports programs for young kids and there have been many perspectives provided from Doctors, Parents, Program Developers etc.

The main thing that they are missing is that while yes Lil Kickers is a Soccer Program, it is mainly a child development program that focuses on listening skills, social skills, teamwork, sharing, social development and much more. The classes are loosely structured to provide the children with the tools that they need to have a good time but we are not strict with the youngest groups in enforcing that they need to be paying attention or following along 100% of the time.

With the younger children we do not focus on skill development, passing, shooting, trapping etc. Those are skills that they can build later in life when their bodies are ready for that. We are providing kids and parents with a way to interact with other children and parents while providing exercise for their child in a nurturing environment. We hire instructors that have experience working with young children and many of whom are child development majors at the local universities. We do not focus on hiring soccer coaches or players as they often do not understand how to communicate appropriately with young children and their focus isn’t often on what is best for the child.

Lil Kickers is a non competitive program and even in our Micro Leagues we do not keep score, have goalies or encourage one team to beat another. We encourage teamwork and safe and fair play. We strongly agree that kids should not be forced into sports at a young age and that is why our program is there to encourage each individual and to let them develop at their own pace.

If you have never seen or tried out the Lil Kickers Program we would love to have you come in and watch a class or sign up for a free trial to see if the program is something that you and your child would enjoy. We are just interested in keeping kids moving and healthy! Here is to a Happy and Healthy 2011!

The Social Experience of Kick City

October 13, 2010 by visualpeople

When Kick City Sports Park first opened it was just like every other indoor center in the Northwest. Players would come and play their game and then leave to go grab a bite to eat and a beer somewhere else. This was not the social experience that the new owners were looking to instill in their patrons when they bought Kick City in 2006.

The new owners of Kick City Sports Park wanted to create a total social and sporting experience for the communities of Springfield and Eugene so they decided to keep building and add on the soccer shop, pub, new seating areas and all new glass dasherboards. Since then the atmosphere at Kick City Sports Park has been completely transformed into a place where players, teams and fans can come to gather before and after games and to kindly heckle their friends on the field. We are also working on adding more service and seating in the areas between the two fields.

Now when you walk into The Pub or step on to the balcony any night of the week you will see a wide mix of college students, parents, kids, friends, teenagers and grandparents all in one area for the same reason, to enjoy the game of soccer and the atmosphere that Kick City provides.

You can’t tell me that you have never noticed the difference between playing in a game when the balcony is completely full along with the viewing areas and the pub versus when it is empty. It makes a difference. When there are lots of fans/observers on the balcony and in the pub the game on the field becomes more lively and more engaging. Players tend to play harder and have a more enjoyable experience.

This is what Kick City is all about, it’s not about just playing a game once a week and then leaving, it is about hanging with your team, watching the next few games, getting to cheer/heckle on your friends and getting to have an overall social experience with your friends unlike any other.

We have been told by multiple customers that this the only place in town that they can truly hang out with their friends, their kids and other patrons in a relaxed environment while being able to watch a fun game and never once have to worry about the weather!

With that being said we feel like we have done what we set out to do which was to provide a unique social and sporting experience for ALL of our customers not just one group. We are continually brainstorming ideas that would make it better for all of our customers and we are looking at options for expanding the business in the future.

Regardless of what changes we foresee in the future we will always put our all of our customers first and we always want to keep in mind that we are not just a soccer facility we are a community asset that wants to provide our community with an excellent facility that provides the optimal social experience also.
Yours in Soccer,
Megan

Kick City Gets a Face Lift

October 6, 2010 by visualpeople

If you haven’t been to Kick City in the past month or two you may be surprised to see it now. As any current player can confirm, we have made some drastic changes in an effort to make the field play better as well as adding better viewing options for the fans.

The dasher boards have been completely redone. The corners are now round instead of segmented and the boards are a high density bright white plastic. The plexi-glass in front of the deck and in the corner is now gone. It has been replaced by ½” tempered glass panes along the sideline and all the way around the corner to the goal. Not only does this create better viewing for fans, but the ball now bounces true off the glass instead of dying when it hit the plexi-glass.

New glass entrance doors for both fields have been ordered and are set to arrive at the beginning of November. Also arriving are new player box doors for both fields. We will be lowering the height of the boxes from 12” down to 8” to make the step on and off the field more comfortable. Over the next week or two we will be raising the net an extra few feet to help reduce the number of stoppages when the ball hits it. Hopefully, this will keep the game flowing even faster than it currently does. Check out our link for recent photos Construction Photos

We are currently working on a plan for seating between the two fields. Some ideas have been a countertop along the small field like the one in the pub, tables and chairs, bleachers, a standing back bar along the end line of the main field, etc.

Come on by and take a look and sign your team up for Winter season!

Lil Kickers and Community Outreach

September 27, 2010 by visualpeople

Back when we purchased Kick City Sports Park in 2006 the Owners wanted to create a place where customers could have the best social and sporting experience possible they also wanted to give back to the community by giving them a place that was fun and could be enjoyed by players of all ages.

When we were looking to expand the business that same year we looked long and hard to find a company that had the same morals and values that we did and was focused on the child and their experience and not winning and losing. We found that in the Lil Kickers program as they are a child development program first and a soccer program second.
Lil' Kickers Class
Because Lil’ Kickers is first and foremost a child development program our purpose is really to help children mature on all levels. Our classes focus on building a strong physical, intellectual and emotional foundation that will help children be successful on and off the soccer field. We believe in teaching children in ways that suit their developmental level. So you won’t see adult-like skill drills in our classes, but you will see teaching methods specifically designed to create an atmosphere that is effective and fun. You will also see happy, confident and sweaty kids who are eager to learn and want to keep coming back for more.

We continue to be committed to children and to making a difference in the community and therefore we have created the Lil Kickers COOL program which is designed to give back to all the local non-profits and children’s programs in the area. Lil Kickers COOL will come out to any non-profit event or daycare/preschool for Free to give children a chance to play and experience soccer. We want to keep kids healthy and active.

We have already partnered with Willamalane Parks and Recreation Rotary Club of Eugene and many more groups to bring a fun and safe activity to them. If you are interested in partnering with Lil Kickers to have us come to our next non-profit event or your daycare/preschool we would be more than happy to.

When you think back to your childhood and playing sports, do you remember winning and losing or do you remember the overall experience that you had? We want to use our time with your children to create the best experience and the best memories possible that they will carry through the rest of their lives with them.
